FIRST LOOK AT SUPERCAR

This year, Supercheap Auto Racing Fans get a first look at the 2018 Supercheap Auto Racing Ford Falcon FG X as YouTube sensations Mighty Car Mods challenge Tickford Racing driver Chaz Mostert to a series of fun-filled drag races in their latest online episode taking place on the pavement of the Western Sydney International Dragway.

Mighty Car Mods is an Australian automotive YouTube series hosted by Marty Mulholland and Blair “Moog” Joscelyne, who started the series on their hometown driveway ten years ago, and since then have racked up over 400 million views across their channel. The MCM duo specialise in creating unorthodox vehicle combinations, outfitting seemingly ordinary automobiles with fascinating modifications and testing them on the track. The pair’s admirable efforts have earned them the opportunity to work on campaigns for major Hollywood franchises including Fast & Furious, Transformers, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Even given their success, Marty and Moog were elated to take their creations head to head with one of Australia’s fastest drivers and most powerful cars.

“We are not qualified mechanics, so the kind of cars that we build are not your typical race cars,” said Moog, “like our off road Nissan Silvia, our tiny turbo Daihatsu Mira from Japan or our Honda powered Mini. They’re all strange cars like a lot of what we build, but this is what excites us the most, and being able to go up against such an icon of motorsport in the form of the Supercheap Auto Supercar was an incredible experience.”

The video sees Mostert do battle with six MCM creations, where the No. 55 Supercheap Auto’s 650hp Ford roared next to concoctions including an ethanol-consuming Subaru shopping wagon with a Tribeca engine, a Ford Focus RS the pair worked on in Germany, the aforementioned Nissan Silvia, and an old Toyota Cresta that packs more punch than meets the eye.

Having concluded 2017 with his best championship result to date, Mostert has high hopes of continuing his growth into a championship calibre driver, and Supercheap Auto is keen to assist.

Entering their third year together at Tickford Racing, Mostert and Supercheap Auto have enjoyed three race wins and six poles, along with claiming the 2017 Enduro Cup with Steve Owen. In 2017, Mostert put the No. 55 Supercheap Auto Falcon FG X on the podium eight times in 26 races, and was in the championship fight all the way to the concluding round of the season, finishing fifth in the final tally, the best amongst his Tickford Racing teammates.

“I’m certainly looking forward to getting the season underway,” said Mostert, winner of the 2014 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. “We had some good runs in 2017 and were in the championship hunt most of the year. If we can keep the pace we had, especially in the second half of 2017, there’s no reason we can’t contend for the championship again.”

Mostert was one of five drivers to claim multiple wins in 2017, and believes consistency will be key for his team in 2018.

“We had a few races last year that really hurt us in the championship,” said the 25-year old Queenslander. “It was only an off race here or there, but in this championship you can’t be out of the top ten and compete for the title. Really you’ve always got to be in the top five, which is a big ask, but the team have been working hard and we’ll be ready to take the Supercheap Auto machine to the front this year.”

Like Mostert, Tickford Racing CEO and team principal Tim Edwards is eager to see the progress Car 55 makes in 2018, and is equally as pleased to have Mostert and Supercheap Auto back on board with the Campbellfield-based team.

“We’re very excited about the 2018 season with Chaz and Supercheap Auto,” Edwards said. “Obviously it’s been a treat watching Chaz develop under our guidance the past several years, and to see him build year on year, especially with what he’s had to deal with, tells a lot about his spirit and determination. He took a good step forward in 2017, and the next step is to fight for a championship, which I think he’s ready to do.”

The 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship begins March 1-4 at the Adelaide 500, where Mostert has three podium finishes and a pole position to his credit in four years and eleven races.
