BATHURST 1000 QUALIFYING REPORT – PRODRIVE RACING

posted in: Uncategorized 0

With four cars in the top ten in Friday qualifying, Prodrive Racing (Australia) is perched in prime position for a great start to Sunday’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Having shown pace all weekend, Prodrive Racing will see all four of its entries in Saturday’s Top Ten Shootout, where the fastest qualifier will sit on pole for Australia’s Great Race.

Earlier in the day, Dean Canto (#5 The Bottle-O FG X) led the co-driver only practice session, while Chaz Mostert (#55 Supercheap Auto FG X) was second-quickest in the second practice session.

Mostert paced the team in group qualifying with a fast lap of 2m04.53s, good enough for third overall. Cameron Waters (#6 Monster Energy FG X) was close behind in fourth, followed by Mark Winterbottom (#5 The Bottle-O FG X) in fifth and Jason Bright (#56 MEGA Fuels FG X) in 10th. The quartet of drivers will all participate in Saturday afternoon’s Top Ten Shootout to determine their starting order for the 161-lap race.

“We are chasing the car a bit and we probably created a few losses. I knew we would get into the shootout as the car was good enough for the top 10, but I still need to get things to where I am comfortable in the race. There are some areas where we can tidy it up, but when you have so many days of practice you can be a bit adventurous. Though Sunday is coming closer so you’ve got to nail down what you want. But we’re in the top five and in the shootout tomorrow so we’ll tidy the car up and go for pole.”

“It was a really good day. Richie’s practice went really well and he’s comfortable in the car which is the main thing. Qualifying went to plan we just tried to get quicker each time. I went a lot quicker on my last lap which would’ve put me into second but the red flag came out. It was unfortunate but the main thing was getting into the shootout which we’ve achieved.”

“The car’s been pretty good since we rolled off the truck. We had a few issues in practice with some braking stuff, but it’s good to be on top of that now. The car probably feels a little bit better as a race car. As the fuel load kind of went off (in qualifying) we kind of lost our balance a bit. But overall to be up here is always great. To be in the top ten, it’s one of the best sessions of the year, to have the track to yourself.”

#56 MEGA Fuels PRA Ford
Qualifying: 10th, 2m05.08s
Jason Bright
“Yesterday I thought went great and we were pretty happy. Garry had some dramas this morning and that carried over to my session which isn’t what you want leading into qualifying. But I was happy with my first run, felt there was plenty of time left to come and we slightly improved. The track went off a little on my last two runs and I speared off at The Chase twice so we did just scrape in. But we are better than that by a couple of tenths which would put us right on the back of our teammates.”

Tim Edwards, Team Principal:
“I’m very proud of the entire team. To get one car in The Shootout takes a lot of work, but to put all four in is pretty special. We’ve been pretty strong throughout the weekend, and having four cars going for pole should be advantageous. Credit to the crew for their hard work, and the drivers for their performances today. We’re looking forward to four strong runs tomorrow.”
