Following a year where Tickford Racing honoured Allan Moffat’s legendary 1977 win at the Bathurst 1000, the Moffat name will again be celebrated in 2018 with the addition of James Moffat to Tickford Racing’s co-driver lineup for the Pirtek Enduro Cup. James, the 33-year old son of Allan, brings seven full seasons of Supercars experience to the team, which concluded at the Newcastle 500 in November.
“Obviously I think it’s a great opportunity to join up with everybody at Tickford Racing, and is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Moffat. “This all happened pretty quickly. My main focus, once it became clear to me that I wasn’t going to be able to remain full time in the championship, was to secure a co-drive that I thought put me in as good a position possible to win some of the biggest races of the year. It’s exciting to join what is already a pretty strong group, and I’m just really looking forward to working with everybody on the team and hopefully achieving some great results.”
The signing marks a return to the team for Moffat, who made his Supercars debut as co-driver to Steven Richards at Phillip Island and Bathurst in 2010 under the Ford Performance Racing banner. Since his full-time debut in 2011, “Moff” has competed in every Supercars round, hurdling both the 200-race and 100-round barriers over the course of the 2017 season.
“Certainly I feel like I’ll be able to bring some pretty current experience,” Moffat added. “Obviously I know myself, and when you’re a main game driver you always want a co-driver that’s got experience. Perhaps I’m somebody that fits that criteria, and at the same time while I’ve got a bit of experience, hopefully I’ve got a bit of speed to offer as well which proves to be a pretty successful combination.”
Tickford Racing aims to defend it’s Pirtek Enduro Cup title, won by Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen in 2017, and team principal Tim Edwards has lauded Moffat’s signing, pleased to add another renowned talent to the team’s already-impressive stable.
“James was at the top of the list in our co-driver search,” Edwards said, “so bringing him aboard is a big tick for us. You always want a co-driver who has the right blend of pace and maturity to be quick and consistent, and we believe we’ve got that in James. He’s had plenty of experience in these cars since debuting with us all those years ago, and should make a great addition as we go after another Enduro Cup and try to get back atop the podium at Bathurst.”
Alongside a race win at Winton Motor Raceway in 2013, one of Moffat’s career highlights came in 2014 when he followed Mostert across the line as runner-up at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Citing the four-car team’s leading pace in the latter half of 2017, the Melbourne resident believes he can help the team achieve more of those shining results in the 2018 enduros.
“Clearly Bathurst is the biggest, I think we can go there as genuine contenders for the race, and that’s exciting for me,” said the second-generation racer. “Obviously the team showed really strong pace towards the back half of the year, and hopefully the team can keep that momentum into 2018. It’s good to have something locked away. I think all parties involved are excited about it, and I’m looking forward to the experience.”
