It is published against the M230T Prolift, the M430R Prolift and the green M832, M842 and M844 remotes, and it does not go near blue Merlin handsets, Merlin+ equipment, Merlin+ 2.0 equipment or any motor built before July 2001.

One difference between this and the aftermarket handsets for the same openers surprises people, so it is better said plainly than discovered later. The genuine M842 operates two doors. The compatible remotes on the same range operate four. Both buttons here are independently programmable, so you can put them on two different motors or set both to the same door, but two is the ceiling. If you need three or four openers on one handset, the Merlin Compatible Remote is the one that does it.

What you get for choosing the genuine part is the thing that does not appear on a specification sheet. It is the handset Merlin designed for the receiver in your motor, so there is no question of it coding to some openers on the list better than others, and range is what Merlin intended rather than what a third party achieved. On a long driveway or a basement door that is the difference people notice.

It is a compact unit at about 3.47 cm wide, 5.5 cm long and 1.5 cm deep, transmitting on 433.92 MHz, with an LED that confirms each press. The battery is a CR2025, which is a flat coin cell and the only one of its size in our range, so it is worth noting the size now rather than discovering it at a supermarket in three years. The compartment needs a tool.

Green Merlin equipment is now old enough that some of it is on borrowed time. If a new remote does not restore reliable operation, the receiver in the motor is the next thing to look at, and an Allgate technician can test it rather than leaving you to buy handsets until one works.

Buy the genuine one if range matters or if the door is at the end of a long approach. Buy the compatible one if you need four channels or if budget is the deciding factor. Both are honest answers and they suit different properties.
