The first line of the supplier's own compatibility list is not a model number. It is an instruction: your remote should look the same as the one shown on the left of the product image. It is listed first because it is the check that actually settles this one, and it beats reasoning backwards from a number stamped on a motor mounted near the ceiling.

Beyond the M804 itself, it is published against the M230T Prolift, the M430R Prolift, the P-230T Prolift and the blue M802 remote.

One limit is stated here that the rest of the range leaves in the small print. This remote operates a single door. Not two, not a door and a gate. If you were hoping to consolidate two openers onto one handset, this is not the part that does it, and that is much better known now than after it arrives.

Grey buttons and the M872 are out, exactly as they are on the M802 listing. And as with everything at 40.685 MHz, the line is drawn at July 2001, with green remotes, Merlin+ and Merlin+ 2.0 all belonging to a different system. Because that frequency is an Australian allocation, the remote is sold for Australian use.

It is a slim black handset, about 3.47 cm wide, 5.55 cm long and 1.5 cm deep, with an indicator light and a 23A 12V battery already installed. The battery cover needs a tool.

Allgate sells this as a compatible part and calls it nothing else. It is not manufactured, authorised, endorsed or approved by Merlin.

A last word on the name, because it costs people more time than it should. M804 and M-804 are the same remote. If you have searched one spelling and found nothing, try the other before concluding the model is no longer available. Half the difficulty with Merlin parts of this age is that the same handset was written down three different ways.
