About the Merlin Compatible Remote (M842/M844)

Colour is the first test and it settles most of it. This is for green Merlin remotes. If the handset you are replacing is blue, you are on the earlier Prolift system and want the Merlin M802 Compatible Remote or one of its siblings instead.

The date is the second test, and it is unusually clean for equipment of this age. Merlin changed systems in July 2001. This green range covers motors made from that point onward and explicitly excludes anything built before it. The blue range does the exact opposite. The two meet at that month and share no models at all, so if you know roughly when your opener went in, you already know which half of our Merlin range to be looking at.

Published compatibility runs to the M230T Prolift, the M430R Prolift, and the green M832, M842 and M844 remotes. Merlin+ and Merlin+ 2.0 equipment sits outside it entirely, which is a different system again rather than a later version of this one.

It handles up to four doors, each button coded on its own, which is more than the genuine Merlin handset for the same openers manages. The Merlin M842 Genuine Remote controls two. That is worth knowing if you have a garage, a shed and a gate to run and were assuming the genuine part would do more rather than less.

The case is slim at roughly 3 cm wide, 7 cm long and 1.2 cm deep, with a slide protector over the buttons so it does not open the door from inside a pocket, and an LED that confirms each press. It transmits on 433.92 MHz and the supplier describes it as long range. A 27A 12V cell is fitted before dispatch, behind a cover that needs a tool. That is a cylinder, not a coin cell.

Two checks before you order, both from the supplier and both worth doing. Your existing remote should appear in the main product image, and your motor model should be on the list above. Either one alone is not enough on a range where several handsets look alike.

This is a generic remote rather than a Merlin one. It is not manufactured, authorised, endorsed or approved by Merlin.

If your green remote still works and you are buying a second handset, code the new one while the old one is in front of you and label both. Merlin green remotes give no clue on the case about which door they were set to, and a drawer with three unlabelled ones in it is a genuinely annoying afternoon.
