About the SPACE/N

Start with the door, because that decides everything else. A sectional door is made of horizontal panels hinged together that run up a pair of tracks and fold back flat under the ceiling. A counterweight door is a single rigid panel that tilts out and up, balanced by weights or springs at the sides. The SPACE/N drives both of those.

It does not drive a roller door. If your door rolls up into a drum above the opening rather than travelling back along the ceiling, this is the wrong opener and no accessory changes that. Roller doors are the most common garage door in Sydney, so this is worth thirty seconds of looking before you go any further. Ring us on 1300 736 683 and we will put you on the right thing instead.

The second qualifier is area rather than weight. Sixteen square metres is the published limit, so multiply the width of the door opening by its height. A single garage door around 2.4 metres wide and 2.1 metres high comes to roughly 5 square metres. A double at 4.8 metres wide is close to 10. Both sit comfortably inside the limit, and a door that does not is a conversation to have with us rather than a reason to order and hope.

The third is how often the door will be used. DEA rates this version at 20 cycles an hour and 60 in a full day, which is a domestic figure and a generous one for a household. A shared basement door on a block of units will exceed that before lunchtime. That is not a fault, it is a different class of machine, and our commercial and strata technicians are on 1300 655 600 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to specify one.

Inside the housing is a 24 volt motor with two channel encoder technology, which is how the unit knows exactly where the door is at every moment rather than inferring it from running time. That position tracking is what lets it slow down at each end instead of arriving at speed, and it is what lets it recognise an obstruction and stop. Maximum thrust is 600 newtons.

The control board is DEA's NET724EVO, with EASY and PRO menus so a straightforward installation can be set up quickly while an awkward one can still be adjusted properly. Its EVO TRACK force tracking follows the door's own force curve rather than holding one fixed threshold, which matters on a door that is stiffer in winter than it is in February. The radio receiver is built into the board and holds up to 200 transmitters, which is far more than a house will ever need and useful on a shared driveway.

What arrives is the operator with its control board, the track it drives, three GTX4 remotes and one GTX-WALL wall transmitter. Three handsets covers two cars and a spare kept inside the house, which is the arrangement most families settle on anyway. The GTX4 is a four channel 433 MHz handset and DEA supports three coding methods on it, being rolling code, dip switch and DEA's own D.A.R.T. coding. Allgate sells that as one new package and does not break the accessories or the individual spare parts out as separate lines, so this listing is the whole of what we supply for the SPACE/N.

Now the track, because there is one detail in it worth a moment. The steel rail the opener pulls the door along is included in this kit and is supplied as the AB16, which gives 2668 mm of useful travel. DEA makes the same rail in a longer form as well, the AB20, at 3468 mm. The two are not interchangeable, and which one a door needs is decided by how tall the door is rather than how wide or how heavy.

Measuring for that takes a minute. Run a tape from the floor to the top of the door opening, not to the ceiling, because the opening is what the track has to clear. Anything at or under about 2.4 metres is inside what the supplied AB16 will do. A taller door, or one hung on a high lift track so it climbs before it turns under the roof, wants the AB20 instead. If your measurement lands above that, or you are not certain what you are looking at, ring us on 1300 736 683 before you order and we will send the longer rail with it.

A few practical things. It runs from an ordinary 230 to 240 volt power point, so there needs to be one within reach of the ceiling mount. The protection rating is IP20, meaning it is an indoor unit and belongs inside the garage rather than under an eave. It is rated from minus 20 up to 50 degrees Celsius, which covers anything a Sydney garage will do to it. A courtesy light is built into the housing and comes on with the door, which on a night arrival is the difference between finding the step and not.

The belt is the part worth understanding last, because it is the part you will hear. It is reinforced with iron filaments through its length, which is what keeps a belt from stretching and going noisy after a few years, and the whole unit is rated under 70 decibels. If there is a bedroom directly above the garage, that number is the reason to look at a belt driven opener rather than a chain, and it is the thing people tell us they noticed first after the old one came down.
