Work through the compatibility list before you order, because B&D built a great many similar looking handsets. On the remote side it replaces the 062162, the 059116, the 059120 itself, the 062170, and the 62102 and 440EBD. On the door side it covers the BM4 sectional opener, the Controll-A-Door 4, 5, R and P, the Controll-A-Door Shed Master, the FAM4, FAM5, FAM P, FAM R and FAM RDO, the EL4, EL5 and EL R, the EasyLifter, and the Firmamatic SDO and RDO.

Four things rule it out, and each one takes seconds to check with your old remote in your hand. It will not operate another manufacturer's motor. It will not suit a remote running on 27 MHz, which is normally printed on the back of the case or inside it. It will not suit a remote with a bank of seven to twelve tiny switches inside, because those belong to an older system entirely. And it will not suit the 062150, which looks very close to the handset pictured here but carries ridges along its left button.

That ridge is worth a second look if your door is a Controll-A-Door 4. Where the original remote has two buttons and the left one is grooved, the motor sits outside this list no matter what the door itself is called.

The coding is rolling rather than fixed, so the remote sends a different code every time it is pressed and a signal recorded once cannot be used again. On equipment of this age that is not a given. Plenty of the handsets still in daily service on B&D doors are fixed code, and moving to rolling is a real improvement in security rather than a line on a specification sheet.

Each of the four buttons is coded separately, so one handset can run up to four doors. Households that have accumulated a remote per door over the years can usually get back down to a single unit, and the spare buttons cost nothing to leave unused.

Power is a 23A 12V cell, in place before the remote is packed. The 23A is a cylinder roughly the length of a fingernail, not one of the flat coin cells, and a tool is needed to reach it. Spent cells belong at a battery recycling point rather than in the household bin, and spares are best kept somewhere small children cannot get to them.

We also stock aftermarket handsets covering much of the same B&D range at a lower price, and if cost is the deciding factor they are worth a look. The trade is the usual one. A compatible remote can have less range than the genuine part it replaces, and on a long driveway or a basement door that difference occasionally shows up. Where reach matters, the genuine handset is the safer buy.

One thing worth doing while the old remote is still in your hand. Write the number printed on the back of it somewhere you will find it again, inside the meter box or with the house paperwork. B&D part numbers are the fastest way to order the right handset, and they are also the first thing to become illegible after a decade in a pocket.
