About the ATA TX Compatible Remote

Two checks tell you whether this is the right remote for your opener. The first is the remote you already have: it needs to match the unit shown in the product photograph, because the 27 MHz remotes of this era were sold in several shapes and only one of them is this part. The second is the motor itself. Open the cover on the opener and look for a bank of twelve tiny switches on the circuit board. Twelve switches means you are on the right system. A motor with no switches at all, or with a learn or code button instead, is a later generation and needs a different remote. If you are not sure what you are looking at, photograph the motor and the back of your old remote and call us on 1300 736 683 and we will tell you which one you need before you spend anything.

Those twelve switches are the whole coding system, and understanding them is what makes this remote easy to live with. Each switch is set up, down or in some cases left in the middle, and that pattern is the code. The identical pattern is set inside the motor. To program a new remote you copy the pattern across so the two match. There is nothing to pair, no sequence of button presses to get right, and no time limit to beat while standing on a ladder.

This matters most if you have lost every remote you own. A duplicator remote is useless in that situation, because it works by copying the signal from a remote you still have. A switch coded remote is not, because the code is not stored only in the handset. It is sitting in plain sight inside the motor, and it can be read off the board and copied onto the new remote. So long as somebody can safely reach the opener and read the switch positions, a lost set of remotes is a recoverable situation rather than a call out and a new receiver.

What arrives is a single button handheld with a cream case and a grey button, measuring roughly 6.5 cm long, 3.55 cm wide and 1.65 cm deep. It controls one door or one gate. An LED on the front confirms the button has been pressed and gives you the first thing to check if the door does not respond, since a dead LED usually means a flat battery rather than a fault in the opener. It is slim enough for a pocket or a bag and suits a car visor clip.

The 23A 12V battery is fitted before the remote leaves us. A 23A is a small cylindrical cell, not a flat coin cell, and it is the same battery the original 27 MHz handsets used. Opening the battery compartment on this model requires a tool rather than a thumbnail, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a catch that is not there. Keep spare cells away from children and dispose of used ones through a battery recycling point rather than in household waste.

One honest caveat, and we would rather you heard it here than after the parcel arrives. An aftermarket remote of this type can have shorter range than the genuine ATA unit it replaces. For most homes that difference never shows up, because the distance from the driveway to the motor is short. If you are used to opening the door from the end of a long driveway or from inside a basement car park, the genuine remote is the safer choice and we are happy to quote one instead. Range that is poor with any new remote usually points at the opener's receiver or its aerial rather than the handset, and that is a service call rather than a parts problem.
